Ok lets get the ball rolling with Birmingham band The Renegades with '13 Women' from 1966. This was brought to my attention by Mr Dave Grindrod who will hopefully be helping out with this blog.

The Sound of Fuzz
The Renegades consisted of Kim Brown on vox/gtr, Denny Gibson on lead gtr, Graham Johnson on drums, Ian Mallet on bass and Joe Dunnett also on guitar. From what I can gather they formed around the Birmingham (UK) area circa 1962. Their first UK release was as part of the 'Brum Beat' compilation (Dial Records, DLP 1, 1964) with an offbeat, ultra mod version of Liszt's 'Hungarian Rhapsody'. Entitled 'Hungarian Mod' (!), the arrangement was from Brown and bears no indication that they may one day become fuzz disciples. At this time they held a residency at the Adelphi Ballroom in Droitwich and started gaining a reasonable local following, mainly of beat girls swooning over Brown's good looks and wowing at their eye-catching Yankee uniforms they were all now wearing. They never gained a foothold in the UK, despite releasing 4 singles - all for different labels! A modicum of success came from Italy but the one country that did embrace them was Finland, where they scored chart success. 'Thirteen Women' was a cover of an old Bill Haley 45 (well, 'Rock Around The Clock' actually) and they recorded at least two versions. This one is the dirtiest and most cohesive and I'd tell you which pedal the guitar is using if only I knew. What I do know is that the textile workers in this clip (filmed at the Tampella factory in Finland) had probably never heard the likes!
ReplyDeleteFuzz in Finland!
Pardon me, what I meant to say was this song is a cover of Rock Around The Clock's B-side (as released here in the UK).
